Do I still have to pay a fine after I deleted photos?

Recently I got a letter stating that I have to pay £1500 for using 7 photos on my website that I got from Wikipedia. I own a website about fashion models. I wasn't aware that there are copyrights on these photos. I deleted them from my website immediatly after receiving the letter. But they still want the £1500 from me. My question is: Do I have to pay this absurdly high amount even though I deleted the photos? What can I do against this?

Thank you very much,

I am afraid we are a professional body for solicitors, so our staff are not legally qualified and cannot help with legal enquiries.
